Hygienic Sampling Valves: Types and Use

Clamp and threaded hygienic stainless steel sampling valves

In food, beverage, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical production, product quality is checked through samples taken throughout the process. A sampling valve allows product to be sampled from a tank, pipeline or piece of equipment without stopping the process or exposing it to the environment. In this article we explain what hygienic sampling valves are for, their types and what to consider for correct use.

Why Is a Sampling Valve Important?

Samples taken during the process are used to monitor product consistency, carry out laboratory analyses and keep production records. For a sample to give reliable results, it must represent the product at the point where it is taken and must not be contaminated during sampling.

An ordinary tap or valve cannot always meet these requirements: product left on internal surfaces can affect the next sample, and areas that are hard to clean can pose a microbiological risk. Hygienic sampling valves are designed to reduce these risks.

Features of a Hygienic Sampling Valve

  • Smooth product-contact surface: Surfaces in contact with the product are finished to Ra ≤ 0.8 µm, so residue does not cling and cleaning is easier.
  • Stainless steel body: The corrosion-resistant body ensures long service life in hygienic environments with frequent cleaning.
  • Controlled opening and closing: The handwheel opens and closes the valve precisely, making it easy to adjust the sample quantity.
  • Hose-barb outlet: The sample outlet is suitable for directing the sample into a container or a hose.

Types of Sampling Valves

Clamp Sampling Valve

The hygienic sampling valve connects to a clamp ferrule on the tank or pipeline. The clamp connection allows the valve to be removed and refitted quickly without tools, making cleaning and maintenance easier. It is made to DIN standards from AISI 304 or AISI 316L stainless steel. The Ø25 and Ø32 connection sizes are listed on the product page.

Threaded Sampling Valve

The threaded sampling valve is easily added to existing lines and equipment thanks to its male thread. With its hygienic design and smooth internal surface, it is compatible with CIP/SIP cleaning systems. The G1/2 (DN15) and G3/4 (DN20) thread sizes are listed on the product page.

Where Is a Sampling Valve Installed?

Sampling valves are usually installed on tank shells, process pipelines and at the inlets and outlets of critical equipment such as filling, mixing and pasteurisation units. The valve position should be chosen so that the sample accurately represents the product at that point.

Tips for Safe Sampling

  • Before sampling, clean the valve and its outlet according to your plant’s hygiene procedure.
  • Discard the first small amount of product so that product standing in the valve does not mix with the sample.
  • Take the sample into a clean, suitable container without touching its inner surface.
  • After sampling, clean the valve so it is ready for the next use.
