Stainless Steel Ball Valve Types and Selection Guide

Stainless steel ball valve types: standard, mini, top-flange and 3-way ball valve

A ball valve opens and closes the flow in a pipeline with a quarter-turn movement and is one of the most widely used valve types in industrial plants. Thanks to its corrosion resistance, a stainless steel body offers a long-lasting solution for lines carrying water, air and process liquids. In this article we explain the types of stainless steel ball valves, how they differ and what to consider when choosing the right one.

What Is a Ball Valve and How Does It Work?

The body of a ball valve contains a ball with a bore through its centre. A handle or an actuator turns the ball by 90°. When the bore is aligned with the pipeline the valve is open; when it is perpendicular to the line, the flow is shut off. In the closed position the ball seats against the sealing gaskets and stops the flow.

This design makes the valve a fast and practical on/off element. Ball valves are normally operated fully open or fully closed; using them in a half-open position for long periods to regulate flow can wear the seals faster. Where precise flow control is required, other valve types are preferred.

Types of Stainless Steel Ball Valves

Standard (Lever) Ball Valve

The stainless steel ball valve is the most common type on threaded pipelines. It is operated manually by turning the lever 90° and is ideal for opening and closing the flow quickly and reliably on general-purpose lines.

Mini Ball Valve

The stainless steel mini ball valve is used in tight spaces and on small-diameter lines thanks to its compact body. Its threaded connection makes installation easy. It is made of AISI 304 or AISI 316L stainless steel.

Top-Flange Ball Valve

The stainless steel top-flange ball valve has a flange on the top of its body that allows a pneumatic or electric actuator to be mounted directly. It can therefore be used on both manually and automatically controlled lines: a valve operated by a lever today can be automated later without removing it from the line. Sizes from DN8 to DN100 are listed in the dimension table on the product page.

3-Way Top-Flange Ball Valve

The 3-way top-flange ball valve is used to divert or split the flow in three directions. A single valve can switch between two separate lines, reducing the need for several valves. The top flange is suitable for actuator mounting. Sizes from 1/4" (DN8) to 3" (DN80) are listed on the product page.

In 3-way valves, the bore shape of the ball (L or T type) determines the directions in which the flow can be routed. Describing the flow scenario of your line before ordering makes it easier to select the right valve.

Choosing the Right Ball Valve

  • Line size and connection: The valve size (DN or inch) and thread type must match your pipeline.
  • Material: AISI 304 is sufficient for general use. AISI 316L, which contains molybdenum, is more resistant to corrosion in chloride-containing and more aggressive environments.
  • Control method: Will the valve be operated by hand, or connected to automation now or in the future? If automation is planned, a top-flange model should be chosen.
  • Flow direction: Choose a 2-way valve for simple on/off duty and a 3-way valve if the flow needs to be diverted.
  • Operating conditions: The type of medium, operating pressure and temperature affect the choice of seal material. Sharing this information when requesting a quote helps identify the most suitable valve.
